Pawsport Ready: What You Need to Know When Traveling with a Pet

By Rick Pruitt – The Caffeinated Wanderer

There’s nothing quite like hitting the road (or skies) with your best furry friend. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or an extended vacation, bringing your pet along can make travel even more rewarding. But it does take extra planning to ensure a smooth journey—for both of you. Here are some essential tips every pet-loving traveler should know before packing the kibble.

1. Know the Rules Before You Go

Every destination—whether domestic or international—has its own pet policies. Airlines, hotels, and even countries vary widely in their requirements. Research things like:

  • Airline pet policies (in-cabin vs. cargo)

  • Breed and size restrictions

  • Destination-specific requirements (vaccines, quarantine laws, microchipping)

  • Hotel or rental property pet fees and rules

Pro Tip: If traveling internationally, start the paperwork early. Some countries require up to six months of prep!

2. Visit the Vet

Schedule a visit with your vet before your trip. Make sure vaccinations are up to date and ask for a health certificate—often required for air travel or crossing borders. Also, talk about motion sickness meds or calming solutions if your pet tends to get anxious.

Don’t forget a copy of your pet’s medical records (physical and digital). Emergencies can happen anywhere.

3. Pack Their Bags, Too

Just like you, your pet needs travel essentials. Include:

  • Food and collapsible bowls

  • Leash and harness

  • Waste bags and litter (if applicable)

  • Favorite toy or blanket for comfort

  • Medications and first-aid items

  • Crate or carrier (airline-approved if flying)

Having familiar items can ease their anxiety in a new environment.

4. Plan Pet-Friendly Stays and Stops

Not all accommodations or attractions welcome pets. Use pet-friendly travel sites like BringFido or consult your travel advisor (that’s me!) to book places where your pet will feel just as welcome as you.

If driving, plan plenty of pit stops for water, potty breaks, and leg stretches.

5. Mind Their Manners

Make sure your pet is socialized, house-trained, and up for the adventure. A well-behaved pet is more likely to be welcomed—and so are you! Keep them on a leash in public spaces and never leave them unattended in a car or unfamiliar hotel room.

6. Flying with Fido? Know This

Every airline is different, but generally:

  • In-cabin travel is usually limited to small pets in carriers under the seat.

  • Larger pets may need to go in cargo, which has its own risks and restrictions.

  • Book early—airlines have limited pet slots per flight.

  • Avoid layovers and extreme temps.

Some travelers even consider driving or taking pet-friendly rail options instead.

7. Consider Pet Travel Insurance

It might sound extra, but pet insurance can help cover unexpected illnesses, injuries, or even travel cancellations due to your pet’s health. It’s peace of mind for any serious pet parent.

Final Thought: Make Memories, Not Stress

Traveling with your pet is a fantastic way to make memories, but preparation is key. With the right planning, you can avoid common mishaps and focus on enjoying the adventure—together.

Whether it’s sipping espresso at a café in Paris or hiking the trails in the Smokies, your four-legged friend can be your favorite travel companion.
