Some trips earn a permanent place on your list of favorites. For Myra and me, Viking’s Paris & the Heart of Normandy is one of those journeys.
Paris is my favorite European city, so a vacation that begins and ends there already has a head start. Add time on the river and the opportunity to visit Normandy, and you have a trip I am always happy to talk about.
What draws me to this journey is its variety. There is room for romance, history, quiet moments and discovery. It is the kind of vacation that gives a couple plenty to enjoy together—and plenty to talk about long after returning home.
Come Along With Us: A Video From Our Trip
Before we explore the itinerary, come along with Myra and me through this video from our Paris & the Heart of Normandy journey. It is a chance to put pictures to the places and get a more personal look at a trip that remains one of our favorites. Pour yourself a cup of coffee, settle in and enjoy a little travel inspiration!
The Journey, Day by Day
The outline below follows Viking’s published 2027 eight-day, roundtrip Paris itinerary. It is a guide for planning a future trip; individual sailings and shore excursions can vary.
Day 1: Paris—The Adventure Begins
The cruise begins in Paris. Arrival day is a chance to settle aboard and start getting comfortable with your floating home.
My advice is to give yourself some breathing room. If your schedule and budget allow, consider arriving early rather than trying to squeeze everything into embarkation day. For me, Paris deserves time to linger.
Day 2: Paris—Make Time to Enjoy It
A second day in Paris offers more opportunity to explore.
My favorite approach to a city like Paris is to balance sightseeing with a little unplanned time. Leave room to sit with a coffee, enjoy the surroundings and appreciate where you are. You do not have to fill every minute to have a memorable day.
Day 3: La Roche-Guyon and Vernon—A Change of Pace
La Roche-Guyon brings a village-and-castle setting; Vernon offers another small-town stop and access to nearby Giverny.
For travelers interested in Monet, his house and gardens at Giverny add another reason to consider this route. The gardens are seasonal, so check opening dates and the excursion offered on your particular sailing before choosing your departure.
I like an itinerary that makes space for smaller places. They encourage you to slow down and pay attention to details you might otherwise pass by.
Day 4: Scenic Seine Sailing and Rouen
This day pairs time cruising the Seine with Rouen, where highlights include its cathedral, historic clock and half-timbered buildings.
The sailing time deserves a place in your vacation plans, too. My suggestion: put the phone down for a while, find a comfortable seat and simply watch the scenery. As The Caffeinated Wanderer, I would probably add a cup of coffee to that plan!
Day 5: Normandy Beaches—Time for Reflection
The Normandy beaches and American Cemetery are the focus of this day. The Normandy American Cemetery stands above Omaha Beach, overlooking the English Channel.
This is a day to approach thoughtfully. The setting connects a visit to France with the people whose service and sacrifice helped shape its future. Give yourself permission to be quiet, reflect and take in the significance of the place.
For anyone who values history, this part of the journey deserves particular consideration when comparing river cruise itineraries.
Day 6: Les Andelys—A Castle Above the River
Les Andelys is known for Château Gaillard, the hilltop fortress associated with Richard the Lionheart.
For me, the appeal of a stop like this is the combination of a striking setting and a story to discover. When reviewing excursion choices, look at the walking requirements as well as the sights. Choosing an outing that fits your comfort level helps you enjoy the day.
Day 7: Paris via Le Pecq—A Return to the City
The itinerary returns toward Paris via Le Pecq and lists an evening illumination sail in Paris.
Coming back to a favorite city is a lovely way to bring a journey full circle. This is where I would leave room for the experience that matters most to you, rather than trying to finish a long sightseeing checklist.
Day 8: Paris—Homeward Bound, or Stay a Little Longer
Disembark in Paris, with the option to extend your stay.
If you are reluctant to leave, I understand. Extra time can turn “we wish we had” into “we are so glad we did.”
Why This Trip Remains a Favorite
Myra and I have enjoyed some wonderful travels, and this journey holds a special place among them. It brings together my love of Paris and the appeal of exploring by river.
If you are considering it, start with what matters most to you. Is it time in Paris? Normandy’s history? A trip you can share with your spouse or friends? Those answers help shape the right departure, excursion choices and any extra nights.
I would love to help you decide whether this could become one of your favorite trips, too.
Let’s plan your Paris & Normandy journey.
