After spending more than 35 years in the coffee industry, I’ve learned something important:
A great cup of coffee is about more than flavor.
It’s about place, people, and memory.
Coffee has a remarkable way of anchoring us to a moment—whether it’s a quiet sunrise on a cruise balcony, a bustling café in Europe, or a simple cup shared with someone you love.
As The Caffeinated Wanderer, I’ve had the joy of combining two lifelong passions: coffee and travel.
Out of all the cups I’ve enjoyed over the years, these five stand out.
1. 100% Kona Coffee — Kona

If you’re a coffee lover, visiting Kona feels a little like visiting holy ground.
I’ve enjoyed plenty of great coffees over the years, but 100% Kona is special.
Smooth. Rich. Balanced.
No bitterness. No harsh edges.
Just exceptional coffee grown in volcanic soil with ideal weather conditions.
A fresh cup overlooking the Pacific in Hawaii is hard to beat.
That cup reminded me that origin matters.
Great coffee starts at the source.
2. Café au Lait in Paris

Paris is my favorite city in the world.
There’s something magical about sitting at a sidewalk café, slowing down, and simply watching life happen.
No rushing.
No multitasking.
No checking the clock.
Just presence.
During our river cruise aboard the Viking Kari, mornings in Paris felt especially memorable.
Coffee there isn’t just a beverage.
It’s part of the culture.
And honestly, the French may understand something we Americans often forget:
Sometimes the best thing you can do is slow down and savor the moment.
3. Cappuccino in Rome

Italy takes coffee seriously.
Very seriously.
Order a cappuccino in Rome and you quickly realize coffee there is almost sacred.
Strong espresso.
Perfect foam.
Simple presentation.
No giant flavored syrups.
No 32-ounce cups.
Just craftsmanship.
I remember sipping one while taking in the incredible history around us and thinking:
“How many generations have stood here doing this exact same thing?”
Coffee can connect us not only to place—but to history.
4. Morning Coffee in the Scottish Highlands

There’s something about Scotland.
The mist.
The cool air.
The quiet landscapes.
One morning during our trip through Scotland, I had a simple cup of coffee while looking out across the Highlands.
Nothing fancy.
But it was perfect.
Sometimes the best coffee isn’t the rarest bean or most expensive roast.
Sometimes it’s simply the cup that meets the moment.
That morning felt peaceful, reflective, and unforgettable.
5. Coffee on Deck in Alaska

This may surprise you, but one of my favorite coffee memories came while cruising Alaska with Princess Cruises.
Imagine this:
You step onto the deck early in the morning.
Coffee in hand.
The air is crisp.
Mountains surround you.
Glaciers shimmer in the distance.
And everything feels still.
That first sip while watching Alaska wake up…
Unforgettable.
It reminded me why I love both coffee and travel.
Both invite us to pause.
To observe.
To appreciate.
Final Sip
I’ve had coffee in countless places over the years.
Some cups were technically better than others.
But the cups I remember most?
They came with a story.
That’s one reason I believe travel matters so much.
It creates moments that stay with you.
And sometimes…
Those moments begin with coffee.
So I’ll leave you with this question:
Where has your most memorable cup of coffee been?
I’d love to hear your story.
