10 Things I Wish I Knew Before My First River Cruise

Things I Wish I Knew Before My First River Cruise

If you’ve ever wondered whether a river cruise is worth the hype, I understand completely.

Before my first river cruise with Viking Cruises, I had plenty of questions. Would the ship feel cramped? Would there be enough to do? Was it really better than an ocean cruise?

After sailing the beautiful Seine River on a Paris-to-Normandy journey with my wife Myra, I quickly realized why so many travelers fall in love with river cruising.

River cruises offer something very different from large ocean ships: a slower, more intimate way to explore the world.

Here are 10 things I wish I had known before my first river cruise.

1. River Cruise Ships Are Much Smaller Than Ocean Ships

This was probably the biggest surprise.

If you’re expecting giant casinos, Broadway-style theaters, or multiple pools, that’s not what river cruising is about.

Most river ships carry only 150–200 passengers.

What that means for you:

  • More personal service
  • Less walking
  • Faster boarding and disembarkation
  • Easier to meet fellow travelers

It feels more like a boutique floating hotel than a mega-resort.

2. The Destination Is the Star

On an ocean cruise, the ship itself is often a major attraction.

On a river cruise, the destinations are the experience.

You’re sailing right through the heart of cities and villages instead of docking miles away.

One morning you might wake up in Paris.
A day later, you could be exploring Normandy’s historic beaches.

That convenience is hard to beat.

3. Excursions Can Be More Active Than You Expect

Many first-time cruisers assume river cruises are passive.

Not always.

You may encounter:

  • Cobblestone streets
  • Hills
  • Church staircases
  • Long walking tours

Comfortable walking shoes are essential.

If mobility is a concern, choose itineraries carefully and ask about excursion activity levels before booking.

4. Packing Light Really Matters

Cabins are comfortable—but not huge.

Bring:

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Layered clothing
  • A lightweight jacket
  • Minimal luggage

Trust me—less is more.

5. You’ll See Incredible Scenery All Day

This may be my favorite part of river cruising.

Unlike ocean cruising, there’s almost always something to see.

Castles.
Vineyards.
Church steeples.
Historic villages.

Sometimes the best excursion is simply sitting on deck with coffee and watching Europe drift by.

That sounds pretty close to heaven for this Caffeinated Wanderer.

6. You’ll Eat Very Well

Let’s just say… you won’t go hungry.

Expect:

  • Regional specialties
  • Fresh pastries
  • Great wine selections
  • Excellent service

In France, that meant amazing breads, cheeses, and desserts.

No complaints from me.

7. River Cruising Feels Relaxed, Not Rushed

One of the biggest benefits is the pace.

You unpack once.

No airport stress.
No hotel hopping.
No constant packing and unpacking.

That alone reduces travel fatigue tremendously.

8. The Social Atmosphere Is Wonderful

Because ships are smaller, you naturally get to know people.

Meals become conversations.
Excursions create shared memories.

Many travelers leave with lifelong friendships.

That surprised me in the best possible way.

9. Not All River Cruise Lines Are the Same

This is important.

Different lines serve different traveler styles.

For example:

  • Viking Cruises — elegant, destination-focused
  • AmaWaterways — active excursions, upscale dining
  • Avalon Waterways — panoramic suites
  • Uniworld Boutique River Cruises — luxury, boutique feel

Choosing the right line matters as much as choosing the itinerary.

10. You May Become Addicted

Fair warning.

Many people take one river cruise and immediately start planning the next.

That happened to us.

Once you experience the combination of comfort, culture, scenery, and stress-free travel… it’s hard not to want more.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been curious about river cruising, I can tell you this:

It exceeded my expectations.

For travelers who appreciate comfort, meaningful experiences, and a slower pace, river cruising is one of the best ways to see the world.

As someone who loves both travel and coffee, few things compare to enjoying a morning cup while watching Europe glide by outside your window.

That’s a memory that stays with you.
