There is the cruise you plan—and then there is the cruise you actually experience.
After sailing aboard Caribbean Princess from Port Canaveral, with visits to Grand Turk, Amber Cove, and San Juan, I returned home with wonderful memories, plenty of video footage, and a few honest observations that may help other travelers decide whether this is the right ship for them.
The short version? We had an excellent cruise, and I would gladly sail aboard Caribbean Princess again. The crew, food, and entertainment were highlights. However, this is an older ship, and passengers should arrive with realistic expectations—particularly when it comes to technology and mobility.
Here are seven things I learned.
1. A Great Crew Can Make the Entire Cruise
The people serving aboard a cruise ship can turn a good vacation into a memorable one, and the crew of Caribbean Princess did exactly that.
Throughout the cruise, we found the service friendly, welcoming, and professional. Whether we were dining, attending an activity, or simply moving around the ship, crew members worked hard to make passengers feel comfortable.
Ships may receive most of the attention in advertisements, but the crew creates the experience. Caribbean Princess has a crew worth remembering.
2. The Food Was One of the Highlights
Dining is always an important part of a cruise, and Caribbean Princess did not disappoint us.
We enjoyed the variety of food available and the overall quality of the dining experience. One of the pleasures of cruising is being able to try different dishes without worrying about cooking, cleaning, or driving home afterward—and Princess handled that part of the vacation very well.
My advice is to review your dining choices early, make any desired reservations, and leave room in your schedule to try something new.
3. There Was Plenty to Keep Us Entertained
Caribbean Princess offered a good selection of entertainment and activities throughout the voyage. There were opportunities to enjoy a show, listen to music, join an activity, or simply find a comfortable place to relax and watch the ocean.
Not every passenger wants the same kind of cruise day. Some people want a full schedule, while others want a quiet chair and a good view. We found that the ship offered enough choices to enjoy the cruise at our own pace.
4. The Ship Shows Its Age—but That Did Not Spoil Our Cruise
Caribbean Princess entered service more than two decades ago, and there are places where her age is noticeable. Travelers expecting the appearance and features of a brand-new mega-ship should keep that in mind.
However, an older ship is not automatically a bad ship. Caribbean Princess still provides a comfortable, traditional cruise experience with welcoming public areas and plenty to enjoy.
Go aboard expecting a well-traveled ship rather than a newly launched one, and you are more likely to appreciate what she does well.
5. Technology and Wi-Fi Require Patience
Cruise-ship technology can be convenient when it works smoothly, but it should not be the only thing standing between you and an enjoyable vacation.
We experienced some frustrations with technology and Wi-Fi. Travelers who need a constant, dependable connection for work, video calls, or uploading large files should be prepared for an experience that may not match their internet service at home.
Download important information before leaving port, keep screenshots of reservations and travel documents, and do not depend entirely on an internet connection for essential details.
Sometimes the best backup plan is simply having the information saved on your phone.
6. Travelers With Mobility Concerns Should Plan Ahead
Caribbean Princess is a large ship, and getting from one venue to another can involve considerable walking. Elevators can also become busy around dinner, shows, and port arrival times.
Passengers with limited mobility should study the deck plans, choose a stateroom location carefully, and allow extra time to reach dining rooms, theaters, and departure areas.
A travel advisor can help you consider stateroom location and accessibility before booking. Those decisions may seem small on paper, but they can make a significant difference once you are aboard.
7. I Would Sail on Caribbean Princess Again
No ship is perfect, and Caribbean Princess has a few areas that could be improved. Nevertheless, the strengths of our cruise easily outweighed the shortcomings.
The excellent crew, enjoyable dining, varied entertainment, and traditional Princess atmosphere gave us a vacation we will remember fondly. For travelers who value warm service and a relaxed cruise experience more than having the newest ship at sea, Caribbean Princess can be an excellent choice.
Is Caribbean Princess Right for You?
Caribbean Princess may be a good fit if you:
- Appreciate attentive service and a friendly crew
- Enjoy traditional cruising rather than nonstop thrill attractions
- Want varied dining and entertainment options
- Are comfortable sailing on an older ship
- Prefer a relaxed vacation with time to enjoy the journey
You may want to compare other ships if the newest technology, cutting-edge attractions, or a completely modern ship design is your highest priority.
Final Thoughts
Our Caribbean Princess voyage reminded me that the best cruise is not necessarily the newest or flashiest one. It is the cruise where you feel welcomed, eat well, enjoy yourself, and return home with stories worth sharing.
Caribbean Princess delivered that experience for us—and yes, I would sail aboard her again.
