Discover America’s rivers with Viking — from the mighty Mississippi to the Ohio River and beyond.
When someone mentions Viking River Cruises, what comes to mind?
Perhaps a leisurely journey along Germany’s Rhine River, magnificent castles overlooking the Danube, or charming French villages along the Seine.
Those are wonderful experiences, and they’re certainly among the reasons Viking has become such a recognizable name in river cruising.
But here’s something many travelers don’t realize: You don’t have to cross the Atlantic to enjoy a Viking river cruise!
Viking has brought its destination-focused style of river cruising to the United States, offering a fascinating way to rediscover America’s history, culture, music, and natural beauty.
Meet the Viking Mississippi
Imagine sailing along one of America’s most legendary waterways aboard a modern river cruise ship designed specifically for the Mississippi.
Introduced in 2022, the Viking Mississippi accommodates just 386 guests in 193 outside staterooms.
Unlike the traditional paddlewheel riverboats many people associate with Mississippi cruising, this ship features Viking’s signature Scandinavian-inspired design, spacious public areas, panoramic views, and comfortable accommodations.

It’s a different way to experience the American heartland — without constantly packing and unpacking your suitcase!
From New Orleans to America’s Heartland
Viking’s Mississippi River itineraries introduce travelers to destinations rich in American heritage.
New Orleans, Louisiana: Experience the birthplace of jazz, distinctive Creole and Cajun cuisine, and the historic French Quarter.
Memphis, Tennessee: Discover the musical heritage of blues, soul, and rock ‘n’ roll, including connections to Elvis Presley.
Vicksburg, Mississippi: Explore an important chapter of Civil War history and the events that shaped our nation.
Hannibal, Missouri: Step into the world of Mark Twain and the stories inspired by life along the Mississippi.
St. Paul, Minnesota: Discover the heritage of America’s Upper Midwest, its historic neighborhoods, and the communities shaped by river commerce.
Along the way, enjoy scenic landscapes, regional cuisine, cultural enrichment, and the opportunity to see America from an entirely different perspective.
A Few Viking Itineraries Worth Exploring
Viking offers several itineraries of different lengths, making it possible to choose a voyage that fits your interests and schedule.

And Now, the Ohio River!
Here’s another exciting development.
Viking has announced new itineraries for 2027 that expand its American river offerings to include portions of the Ohio River.
The Mississippi & Ohio River Explorer, an 8-day voyage between Memphis and Louisville, and Bayous, Blues & Bluegrass, a 15-day journey between New Orleans and Louisville, offer even more opportunities to discover America’s inland waterways.
These voyages combine historic river communities with the music, traditions, and regional flavors that make each destination unique.
What Makes the Viking Experience Special?
One reason I enjoy recommending Viking is its emphasis on the destinations themselves.
Rather than concentrating on elaborate onboard entertainment, Viking emphasizes cultural discovery, thoughtful service, comfortable accommodations, and enriching experiences.
Viking’s river cruise inclusions generally feature:
- A complimentary shore excursion in each port of call
- Onboard meals, including regional specialties
- Beer, wine, and soft drinks with lunch and dinner
- Wi-Fi
- Specialty coffees, teas, and bottled water
- Cultural lectures and destination-focused enrichment
Specific inclusions and optional experiences should always be reviewed for your selected itinerary.
And speaking of coffee, you can probably guess which onboard amenity catches my attention!
A Different Way to Rediscover America
My wife Myra and I have enjoyed several Viking voyages in Europe, and one of the things we appreciate most about river cruising is the opportunity to experience destinations without the constant routine of changing hotels.
The same concept makes American river cruising particularly appealing.
Think about it: historic cities, fascinating museums, American music, regional cuisine, and scenic waterways — all enjoyed while your floating hotel travels with you.
For travelers who love history and culture, this is certainly an option worth considering.
Let’s Talk About Your Next Adventure!
